"One More Chance" is Film of the Year in the 24th Star Awards for Movies

“One More Chance” was awarded as the Movie of the Year at the 24th Star Awards for Movies by the Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) yesterday, June 27, at Henry Lee Irwin Theater in Ateneo University. Ai Ai delas Alas also won over heavy favorite Cherry Pie Picache for Movie Actress of the Year while Paolo Contis bested heavy favorite John Lloyd Cruz for Movie Actor of the Year. "One More Chance" was also the 007 Top-grossing Pinoy film.

Maricel Soriano stars in Florinda

The Diamond Star is out to make a big comeback in Primetime TV in the upcoming chapter of the “Sineserye Presents: The The Susan Roces Cinema Collection".
Maricel Soriano will star in “Florinda”, another series adapted from a classic movie of Susan Roces.

Keeping the tradition of horror and showcases of high caliber performances, followers of "Sineserye Presents: The Susan Roces Cinema Collection" can expect "Florinda" to a terrifying and spine-tingling experience.

The last two series of The Susan Roces Cinema Collection also brought successful comebacks on television. Special Philippine edition of "Deal or No Deal" airs Sunday

ABS-CBN is airing the special episode of "Deal or No Deal- Around the World" shot entirely in the Philippines on "Sunday’s Best" (June 22), at 10 pm, signaling the return of the game show’s new season in the Kapamilya network soon.

Kris Aquino joined Howie Mandel in playing the numbers game with two American contestants who flew to Manila in April with their families for the chance to win US$1 million.

The two-hour episode, which was taped in ABS-CBN studios last April 24, will show Howie’s arrival in Manila and his adventures around the city like taking a pedicab, visiting Quiapo, and posing as a promo boy at a supermarket.

The airing of "Deal or No Deal – Around the World" Philippines on NBC in the USA last May 5 was a shining moment for the country as millions of Americans tuned in to see how their hit game show is played the Kapamilya way.

It marks the kick-off for ABS-CBN’s "Panalo Bawat Pilipino" campaign, highlighting how its hit game shows have entertained viewers and improved people’s lives through the years.

"The Singing Bee" rules NUTAM TV Ratings for May

Based on the latest release of the AGB Nielsen nationwide tv ratings for the month of May, ABS-CBN’s The Singing Bee bested Dyesebel by a slim 0.2 percent margin to topped the NUTAM (Nationwide Urban Television Audience Measurement) ratings.

The game show hosted by Cesar Montano received an average of 32.6% while the GMA fantaserye garnered 32.4% in the weekdays primetime race for the month of May 2008.

In the weekend primetime race, Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition Plus registered the highest average of 28.2% for the month of May beating another Kapamilya show and April leader “Kapitan Boom.”

Here is the synopsis of this Japanese TV series that will soon premiere on ABS-CBN on June 30:

Anne Curtis as “Dyosa” is coming in Philippine TV

Another much awaited show in ABS-CBN is “Dyosa” which stars Anne Curtis. In this series Curtis will transform into a Mermaid (half-fish), a Centaurides (half-horse), and a half-bird.

Synopsis:
Eighteen-year-old Dyosa is living a normal life as a student, a part-time cosplay model and a loving daughter to her midget parents when she discovers that she is not an ordinary girl. A half-man half-goat appears before Dyosa on her 18th birthday to reveal that Dyosa is actually a goddess, a descendant of Mariang Sinukuan and Bernardo Carpio, who is destined to rule the world of the upper gods.

Dyosa has to make a choice: Will she heed the call of her destiny and save the dying world of the Philippine gods and goddesses and leave the life she has lived for 18 years? Or will she resist her new role as a goddess and give up her powers to stay in the human world with the mortal she loves?

"Las Tontas No Van Al Cielo" coming soon on ABS-CBN

Another upcoming show that all Kapamilyas will surely love is the “Las Tontas No Van Al Cielo. Las Tontas No Van Al Cielo, translated as “Dumb Women Don’t Go To Heaven”, is an upcoming tagalized Mexican telenovela on ABS-CBN.

Summary:
Candy is a beautiful young girl filled with dreams and hopes for her future. At her 15th birthday party, she meets the man of her dreams: Patricio. He became everything to Candy. He was in her thoughts and in all her dreams. Not only was he her boyfriend, he also became her father’s boss. Candy couldn’t be happier and shares her happiness with her two sisters, Alicia and Veronica. Some time later, Alicia moves to Tijuana and Veronica dies due to a liposuction gone wrong. At her 18th birthday party, just one week before her long dream wedding with Patricio, Candy makes love for the very first time. Alicia arrives for Candy’s wedding, who feels guilty for her sister as she feels responsible that Alicia has abruptly ended her career as a dancer. Alicia forgives her, or so, Candy thinks.

Patricio on the other hand, is deeply in love with the “daughter of the chauffer”, thing which allows him to enjoy his small revenge against his father. His father was an alcoholic who abused his mother. At Patricio’s bachelor’s party, his friends have prepared him a little surprise. They give him a key to the same hotel where Alicia is staying at. Alicia discovers the little prank and takes advantage of the situation to have intimacy with Patricio.

At Patricio and Candy’s wedding, a leaf is about to turn over. Candy invited her dear Uncle Meño, who had been long excluded by the family when he announced he was gay. Meño arrived to the church but left soon after to avoid any confrontations but left an envelope containing much money. During the wedding party, Patricio and Alicia go into a bathroom to discuss what had happened the night before. Candy, who had gone to change her shoes, arrives just in time to see Alicia and Patricio enveloped in a passionate kiss. Candy’s parents try to reason with her saying Patricio is a man and a situation like that is very normal for a man.

Candy now has two routes. Be stupid, follow her parents advice and marry the man she loves even after he’s betrayed her and very likely will continue to do so? Or take a chance, leave the man who betrayed her and find her destiny somewhere else?
Stripping off her wedding dress, throwing it in her ex-love’s face, and running across the beach in her lingerie, Candy is about to change her destiny. Candy discovers the envelope her Uncle gave her to travel to Mexico City and kill the old Candy and be born anew. In Mexico City, Candy moves in with her Uncle Meño without knowing that the one time she made love with Patricio, was enough to leave her pregnant. Santiago is a single father who had been abandoned by his wife, Paulina , years earlier right after their baby girl, Rocio, had been born. When she left Santiago no longer focused on finding love, only on his girl and his profession as a plastic surgeon. After his wife’s departure, Santiago no longer trusted or respected women and only saw them as forms as entertainment. When he meets Candy, he is determined to romance her in order to take her to bed but he quickly discovers how special Candy really is and falls in love with her.

Though they first dislike each other as time passes, Candy takes a liking to Santiago and attempts to live a romance with him, though always with the constant battle of love against her dignity of woman and the obstacles placed in her way by Marissa, Santiago’s girlfriend and Candy’s business partner. Candy publishes, in a popular public magazine, a weekly column titles “Stupid women don’t go to heaven.” When the column proves to be a success, Candy’s dream of having a proper place in society as a women, becomes reality.

Without imagining it, Santiago is to be her rival as he continues with his clinic dedicated to artificial beauty while Candy is dedicated in promoting inner beauty. The confrontations will be many: she will rob patients from Santiago and he from her. But above anything and everything will be the love that’s greater than both of them can even imagine.

Everything changes when Patricio re-enters Candy’s life determined to win back the women he still loves but the catch…he is now married with Alicia. Candy will now have to decide to whom her heart really belongs to…Patricio? Her first love, the love of her life. the father of her son but the man who betrayed her? Or Santiago? Bea Alonzo launches debut album

Aside from acting and dancing, actress Bea Alonzo proved her versatility as she promotes her debut album entitled "The Real Me." Alonzo's album was released by ABS-CBN's music outfit Star Records.

To promote her latest project, Alonso guested in the June 18th episode of daily show Boy & Kris. In the show, Bea sang two tracks from her album and then talked more about her album with the show's hosts Boy Abunda and Kris Aquino.

Included in "The Real Me" album are the actress' favorite songs, "Kagandahan," "You," "I’m Missing You," "Crazy About You," "Close To You," "I Will Always Love You", and an original composition which will be used as the the theme song of her upcoming show "Betty La Fea".

Alonso is busy with mini-concerts and mall shows to promote her album.
The actress said that she is happy and excited over her new album, but she won't forget her craft -- acting.

"I’m really excited na about 'Betty La Fea'. At saka hindi talaga mawawala 'yung puso ko sa craft na 'yun," said Alonzo.

Singing is not new to Bea since she already recorded a song for the soundtrack of "Maging Sino Ka Man 2".

Fhylbert Angellie Fagestrom in real life, Alonzo was first seen as a young nerd who transformed into a 20-year old lawyer in ABS-CBN's "Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay".
At the age of 15, she was nominated for Best Actress by the PMPC Awards. This made her the youngest nominee for the category.

Zanjoe is Mariel's leading man in 'Varga'

On and off-screen sweethearts actor-model Zanjoe Marudo and host-actress Mariel Rodriguez will work together for ABS-CBN's upcoming super-series "Varga".
In the series, the latest boob tube superheroine Varga will fall in love with a mortal played by Marudo.

"Masaya kasi first time naming magkakasama sa isang series, dati kasi mga isang episode lang, " Marudo said.

Marudo shared that he is now excited to see Rodriguez wear her sexy superhero costume for the series.

"Varga" is the story of a being from outer space gifted with superpowers and beauty. She lands on earth and becomes destined to protect humankind from the forces of evil with the help a kind-hearted girl.

As an alien superheroine who comes to love and protect humanity, Varga will undergo challenges that will really test her character.

The father of Pinoy superheroes, Mars Ravelo created "Varga" in 1947. "Varga" first appeared in Bulaklak magazine.

It was Varga whom Ravelo would later evolve into the ultimate Pinoy superhero icon, "Darna" in 1949, when the comics creator joined Pilipino Komiks.

"Varga" is the second part of the "Mars Ravelo’s Komiks Presents" series. The first Komiks series presented "Kapitan Boom!" top-billed by model-turned-actor Jon Avila.

"Kapitan Boom!" is a huge success, enjoying high ratings for its Saturday time-slot.

Actress and TV host Mariel Rodriguez flies high as Varga, the latest boob tube superheroine--gifted with superpowers, beauty and a great body--to be featured in "Mars Ravelo's Komiks Presents" series.

The Father of Pinoy Superheroes, Mars Ravelo created Varga in 1947. Varga first appeared in Bulaklak magazine. It was Varga whom Ravelo would later evolve into the ultimate Pinoy superhero icon, "Darna" in 1949, when the comics creator joined Pilipino Komiks.

As Varga, Rodriguez' fans and supporters will really enjoy seeing their idol flying high in the sky and defeating villains.

Kristine goes back to comedy on TV

Kristine Hermosa will return to the comedy genre on TV through the upcoming comedy show "Banana Split" where she shares top billing with Anne Curtis and Valerie Concepcion. The last time she did a sitcom was seven years ago in "Richard Loves Lucy".

"Drama ka ng drama, minsan gusto mo naman ng something else, parang pahinga. Parang may breather lang," shares Kristine, whose last dramatic project was the recently concluded "Prinsesa ng Banyera".

Kristine says she enjoys doing comedy as much as drama. "Para sa akin kasi I enjoy both talaga. Sa comedy lang naman ang pinakaimportante yung timing and sense of humor. May sense of humor naman ako in real life," she grins.

Having built a good relationship with her co-stars also makes her comedy comeback a breeze. "Si Anne naman she’s my friend talaga. Si Valerie is a good person. ‘Pag nag-Wowoweeako nakakausap ko siya. Wala naman masyadong adjustment," she reveals.

To this end, he bequeathed the rights to his films to ABS-CBN to ensure that later generations would be able to watch his films.

Fernandez passed away on Saturday, June 7, after a two-year struggle against periampullary cancer. He passed away in the presence of his wife, actress Lorna Tolentino and his family at their home in White Plains, Quezon City due to periampullary cancer.

It was fortunate that in December 18, Fernandez was able to sign a contract with ABS-CBN, giving the netowork the rights to air his films.

Fernandez was accompanied by Lorna Tolentino at the signing which was witnessed by ABS-CBN executives, including the network's president Charo Santos-Concio and Malou Santos.

At the time, Fernandez appeared fit and healthy and was all smiles as he signed the contract spoke to ABS-CBN officials.

The actor's movie will be aired in the future on a weekly basis only on Kapamilya network. A report said that Fernandez' films will be aired at the end of the Fernando Poe Jr. Cinema Collection.

Dubbed as the Philippines Cinema's Prince of Action, Fernandez made almost 100 films. At the age of three, Daboy starred in the movie "Luksang Tagumpay" with his father Gregorio Fernandez as the film director.

His career bloomed when he starred in action films based on real life characters, both anti-heroes and heroes, including "Bitayin si Baby Ama" (1976); "Batuigas: Pasukuin si Waway" (1984; for which he won Best Actor from the FAP and the FAMAS) and "Victor Corpuz" (1988; for which he won Best Actor, FAMAS) and "Markang Bungo."
